Medical Assistant Schools

Medical Assistants play an important role on health care teams in physician offices and clinics.

Our Medical Assistant program, also called Medical Assistant Technician or Medical Assisting at some campuses, uses a career-focused approach to prepare students for entry-level positions. Students learn in classrooms and in labs where they watch demonstrations and practice basic medical techniques. All students learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well.

Students learn about anatomy and physiology, as well as fundamentals of medical diagnostic and laboratory techniques. They get hands-on training for procedures such as preparing patients for exams, taking their vital signs, and administering injections.

Students who graduate from the program are candidates for entry-level Medical Assistant positions in physician and specialist offices and other healthcare facilities including clinics and outpatient care centers. About half work in physician or specialist offices.

Medical Assistants provide routine patient care, including taking patient histories, giving injections, taking vital health signs (blood pressure checks, temperature readings, oxygen measures), and administrative functions including reception and appointment scheduling.

The job market for medical assistants is encouraging. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says it will grow by 29% from 2012-2022, spurred by demand for preventive health services in particular.   Yahoo! Education lists the Medical Assistant field on its list of Top Five Healthcare Careers, part of a trend that finds the healthcare field one of the steadiest around. Other sources, including the Census Bureau, list healthcare as a “stable or growing industry.”
