Five Study Habits to Help You Focus

If you maintain your focus on a task, you can easily accomplish it in the most effective manner. From doing assignments to studying for a test, you will be done with it before you know it. Staying focused also enhances and improves you personal and professional life. It helps you to come up with an effective solution for any problem.  1.    Organize Your Study Space

  • If you have a neat and organized space, you will be able to focus more.
  • Make sure there is nothing on the table that can distract you like your favorite novel or video game or your crafting supplies and especially your cell phone!
  • Clean your desk and only keep the necessary items you need to study.

2.    Breaking Big Tasks Into Small Ones

  • People tend to procrastinate when they have several long-term tasks to accomplish.
  • The best way to resolve this problem is to break your tasks into smaller tasks that are easily manageable.
  • When you break a big task into shorter goals, you will find it easier to keep on accomplishing those small tasks and gradually moving towards finishing the entire task.
  • This helps you to concentrate more and stay motivated.

 

3.    Reward Yourself

  • When you accomplish a certain task, reward yourself. This will also help you stay motivated.
  • Take a 10 to 20 minute break after each task or eat your favorite snack.
  • Plan your rewards initially. When you know that there is a treat waiting for you at the end of the task, you will be more focused on finishing it.
  • Promise yourself that you will play your favorite video game or read your favorite book after you have accomplished the task at hand.

 

4.    Schedule a Study Time

  • Making a proper study schedule is the best method to stay focused.
  • When you have a daily study plan it gradually becomes a habit.
  • Make sure you select a time when you are fresh and energized. This way your mind is focus and ready to retain information.

 

5.    Eliminate Distractions

People get easily distracted without even realizing it. When doing research online for your assignment, don’t waste time going on websites that don’t pertain to the topic that you are researching. It is easy to sway your attention to other tasks when you are not into the task that you have to do.

Determine what distracts you and stay away from it during your study time. For example, if you do find interesting topics similar to the one you are researching bookmark them and read them after you have completed the assignment. If your cell phone distracts you, turn it off. If people or noise distract you, go study at a library or at a quiet place.

Taking tests is the nightmare of almost every student!

How many times have you woken up in the middle of the night because of a nightmare you had where you took a test and failed miserably?

The idea of having to take tests leads to many students to wake-up in the middle of the night in a state of panic. Students  become so stressed out that they mess up their exams even though they prepared so hard for it. The key to passing  any exam is to plan ahead and to adopt test-taking techniques that will work best for you.   So, are you ready to ace your exams? To help you get started, here are several tips for you.

Adopt A Can Do Attitude!

It is vital for students to have a positive attitude before taking any big exam. With a can do attitude, you will more likely to ace your exams. If you think that you will fail, you will fail. If you think that you will pass, you will pass.

Work Out A Study Schedule

By following a daily study schedule, you will be tackling your course material and exam topics easily and methodically. Learning takes time, and by planning, you will feel less stress and anxiety.

It is not fun having to cram a ton of information the night before a big exam, and feeling nervous and scared about failing the exam. Therefore, give yourself enough time to study if you want the guarantee of passing your exams.

Enjoy A Good Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for battling any big exam. In order to emerge victoriously from your exam it is vital that you’re well-rested and relaxed.  Trying to cram the night before the test is not a good idea, and will only increase your stress levels. Learning takes time and cramming large chunks of information will only confuse you during your exam.

If you didn’t study at all, than cramming the night before your exam is not going to help you learn weeks of information. Learn to face defeat and accept the fact that without proper studying and planning you’ll will not pass any exam.

Be Attentive And Alert

When you finally sit down to take the test, make sure to read the instructions carefully so you don’t miss anything important on your exam. Don’t rush, read every question and multiple choice answers carefully. Pay attention to these following words used on your test questions: all, always, none, never, except and only. Before looking at the answers, try to answer the question in your mind. Don’t confuse yourself by over-analyzing the question.

Manage Your Time

After reading the instructions, calculate how much time you should spend on each question and act accordingly. If you don’t know an answer, skip it. Continue answering all the questions you do know, and tackle the tricky and difficult questions later. Don’t break your flow at the beginning of the test.

Study Tips to Become a Better Test Taker

Did you know that there are certain ways you can improve your studying and pre-test habits to become a better test-taker?

An article for the Wall Street Journal titled, “Toughest Exam Question: What Is the Best Way to Study?” outlines five study tips that may improve how you perform on tests.

Practice Tests. I’m not talking about a study guide or an instructor-created practice test (although that would certainly qualify). I’m talking about testing yourself on the material over and over.  According the article, “testing yourself repeatedly before an exam teaches the brain to retrieve and apply knowledge from memory.” This is different than just reading a textbook or reading your notes. The goal is to ask yourself questions and require your brain to come up with the answers. You can use note cards to test yourself or find a study buddy who is willing to ask you questions.

Sleep. You’ve probably heard that you should get a good night’s sleep before a test. While this is true, according to the article, sleep is important in other ways as well:

  • First, make it a point to study the most important things right before you go to bed. Why? Well according to Dan Taylor of the University of North Texas in Denton, you’ll be able to remember those things better.
  • Another thing is that you shouldn’t wake up earlier than you normally do to try to cram in more study time. Why? “[Waking up earlier] could interfere with the rapid-eye-movement sleep that aids memory.”
  • Finally, the all-nighter? Don’t do it. Studying all night without sleeping has been linked to lower test grades in educational studies.

Food. Eat it. Actually, there’s more to it than that. One of the absolute best things you can eat the morning before a test is… Oatmeal. Why? According to the article, “High-carb, high-fiber, slow-digesting foods,” are the best things to eat before a test. If you have an afternoon or evening class, you need to keep this in mind when choosing your lunch and dinner as well. Eating the right foods will fuel your brain and will help keep you energized and alert during your test. 

Distractions. Get rid of them. No matter what you may think or have convinced yourself of, research shows that distractions have a negative effect on your memory. So when you’re taking a test trying to recall which body system has to do with the skin, and all you can recall are the lyrics to a Rihanna song… Well, obviously there is a problem.

Anxiety. According to the article, “an estimated 35% of students are so nervous before high-stakes tests that it impairs their performance.” Thankfully, there are ways you can calm your anxiety. For one thing, you can start imagining yourself performing well at something and applying that feeling when you picture yourself taking a test. If you practice enough, you can hold onto that feeling on test day. It also helps if you take 10 minutes to write down your worries. Studies have even been done on the effectiveness of this exercise. The article cites the results of one such study, which found that, “The anxious kids who did the writing exercise performed as well on the test as the students who had been calm all along. But anxious students who didn’t do the writing performed more poorly.”

Study the Tough Stuff First!

Students in accelerated programs like those offered by Anthem Education Group colleges and schools have to be very careful with their time. One of the toughest tasks they face is scheduling time to prepare for each midterm or final exam.

Jamie Althshule and Eric Althshule run Academic Success, Inc., a Los Angeles company that provides in-home study coaches to support parents and students. The Altshules publish free newsletters loaded with useful study tips. While their company focuses on elementary, middle, and high school students, their study recommendations are useful on the college level as well.

When it comes to prepping for final exams, the Altshules strongly recommend reviewing the more difficult subjects first. Resist the temptation to reach for the academic equivalent of comfort food by studying the subject you like best!

Instead, begin by reviewing and outlining your notes from the class you find most difficult first and work your way down to the easiest. Put your notes into broad categories, and under each category, summarize each item and rewrite, if necessary. Spend 30 minutes on this exercise for each class.

Stick with the 30-minute routine for each review—use a timer if you have to! Take a short break after each hour. And don’t schedule too many sessions in one sitting.
