How To Emphasize Your Skills And Qualification On Your Resume

A resume plays a very significant role in getting you noticed by the right people. A resume is effective when applying for a job, scholarship or internship. A good resume highlights your main qualifications and skills of the candidate. Here are a few tips to emphasize your skills and qualifications on your resume:

Proper Format

• A resume must highlight all your qualities but should be brief. Stick to the facts and provide relevant information. Read the job description you are about to apply for and highlight those skills that are relevant to the job.
• Keep your resume neat. Use bullet points so that the recruiter finds it easy to read. Ensure there is enough space between each section and everything it is not jumbled up.
• Keep it organized. Use headings and mention the necessary qualifications and skills under those headings using bullets. Examples of heading categories: Education, Work experience, Achievements, etc.
• Make sure everything you write is effective, positive and honest. Don’t use negative words or sentences. You don’t have to write full sentences, make points and be specific.

Placement

• Make sure everything is formatted properly.
• Except for your name and contact details, everything should be left aligned. Name and contact details must be placed on top.

Personal Details

• Include your full name, complete address including zip code, phone number(s) and email address on the top. You can also include your LinkedIn and Skype id.
• These details should be written neatly and prominently.

Core Skills

• Mention each skill with a separate bullet.
• Highlight the ones that will be suitable for the job you are applying for.
• Don’t exaggerate. They may ask you about your skills in the interview.

Qualifications

• You must include all your education details in bullet points.
• Mention the last degree you received on the top.
• Include what subject you majored in, year of completion, location and name of the institute.
• If you have achieved good grades, make sure to highlight them.
You can also include the list of courses you have studied in the course.
• Make the entire list of qualification similar to the pattern above. Make sure the details are brief and accurate.

Work Experience

• Write all the work experience you have had up till now.
• Include relevant summer jobs, part time jobs, internships, class projects and field experiences.
• Make sure to include a summary stating your assigned task to show the employers what kind of work you are familiar with.
• Start with your recent experience and move back till your first experience.

Extracurricular Activities

• Extracurricular activities are considered as really significant for success.
• Include all the activities you were involved in like drama club, cheer leading, honorary societies, math club, student council, athlete society, etc.
• Also include the name of the society and its location.

Achievements

• Highlight your biggest achievements in this section, if applicable.
• Your publications, performances, exhibits or awards you achieved.
• This will complement the skills you mentioned above and will demonstrate your success.

Community Service

• Include any social work you have done or are doing. Any community service work or voluntary work which can show you in a positive light can be summarized in this section.
Update Linkedin Information
When you’re updating your resume remember to update your LinkedIn account as well. An updated LinkedIn account will ensure that it continues to serve the purpose that it was made for. With an obsolete email address or number, you’re missing out on opportunities just because you forgot to update your LinkedIn account.

Becoming a Surgical Technologist

Can you imagine a surgical room without a surgical technologist? Me neither. The first surgical technologists were born and bred out of the military. Since nurses were not allowed anywhere near the battlefield, the military trained “medics” to work alongside surgeons. However, it was not after the two world wars of the twentieth century that sparked the need for trained operating room personnel. The role of the “operating room nurse” and “medic” evolved into a separate allied health career, now known as Surgical Technology.

Surgical Technologists- Duties and Responsibilities

Did you know surgical technologists are also called surgical technicians or operating room technicians? These highly skilled allied health professionals fulfill many important duties and responsibilities required for a successful surgery.

Before a surgical procedure, the surgical technologist (ST) is responsible for ensuring the proper arrangement and availability of all necessary equipment needed for the patient’s surgical procedure. They ensure that each surgical equipment and monitoring device is connected and working properly. The surgical technologist is also responsible for prepping the patient for surgery.

During the surgery, one of the (ST) duties is to pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant. Know Your Passion

Every person is passionate about something. Find out what that is, and make a list of all the things you love to do. If you have the passion but not the experience, then think about possible ways of gaining relevant exposure. Search for Information

If, even after following the aforementioned tips, you are confused, then you should search the internet. Gather information from any other source as well, whether it is newspapers, magazines, gazettes, or even libraries. Acquire Training

Sometimes, you may have the passion but not the talent to do the job. New College Grads See Better Employment Prospects for Second Year in a Row

Last April, we wrote a blog about hiring predictions for new college graduates. At that time, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported that hiring of 2011 graduates was expected to increase by a whopping 19.3 percent. It was a big step in the right direction after graduate employment prospects took a noticeable hit during the recession.

But what about this year?

Well, I am very happy to report that this positive trend is expected to continue!

Larry Gordon of the Los Angeles Times also cites findings from a recent report by the Collegiate Employment Research Institute, which says, “Employers are now more optimistic about the college labor market than at any time since 2007.” Being a 2009 graduate, I remember what it felt like during my last year of college. It wasn’t easy trying to figure out what I was going to do after I graduated. Plus, all the negative talk about unemployment, college graduates struggling to find work and having to compete with older, more experienced job candidates certainly didn’t help.

So believe me when I say this is good news. Granted, overall unemployment rates for college graduates under the age of 24 is still too high (6.2 percent) according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, their prospects continue to slowly improve, and are significantly better than people in the same age group with only a high school diploma (22.5 percent).

If You Have These Skills–Consider Web Design!

The best web and graphic designers have a solid set of skills that boost their technical and artistic talents. In fact, if you love art, drawing, and designing, you probably have other interests that can make you not just a good web or graphics designer (or both) but a really talented one!

Ben Hunt, a web and graphic design coach, lists ten skills these artists can use and improve upon to help them create even better products for the web. It’s not necessary to have all of these skills, but having even just a couple can help you become a more skilled designer.

Take a look at this summary of the skills Hunt recommends, and see if there are any you already enjoy and can build upon. They are not listed in any order of importance.

  1. Graphic design skills. Anthem Institute offers a program in Graphic Design & Animation at certain campuses that provides a background and then some for students who want to learn graphic and web design. Graphic design skills are the backbone for attractive websites. Anthem Institute teaches the industry standard skills you’ll  need to for graphic or web design. Our students become adept with Adobe Creative Suite, which used in both graphic and web design, and study digital print, animation, and other techniques used in these fields.
  2. Creative Graphics. This isn’t the same as fancy graphics and Flash-y tools, although these are certainly good to know for clients who like them! But simple designs work well, too. Hunt lists e-bay, Google, Wikipedia, and Craigslist as sites that have proven to be very popular even with basic designs.
  3. Typing. Web and graphic designers spend a lot of time on keyboards. Hunt recommends learning to touch-type.
  4. Self-Learning. Do you teach yourself how to use different tools on your computer and on the web? This is a great skill for both web and graphic designers to have. These fields are “a giant pile-on of visual design, technology, coding, human factors, all that jazz” Hunt says. “And the technology doesn’t stand still from one day so the next. That’s what makes it so frustrating – and so fun!” So if you’re a self-learner, you have a lot of useful skills right there.
  5. Listening. I work with  graphic and web designers who are really good listeners. (That’s why our site looks so good!) Hunt says listening skills will help you figure out what your client or boss wants to see in the site you’re developing or improving. Listening also means realizing what questions you need to ask the client.
  6. Circumspection. This is the ability to look at a problem from several points of view. You need to figure out who you want to visit your site—for example, students or their parents? Maybe instructors? Maybe all of them?
  7. HTML and CSS. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are important tools for creating websites. Not all graphic artists learn these but those who complete Anthem Institute’s Graphic Design & Animation program know them. If you have any familiarity with either of these, you’re already ahead of the game and marking up your own value.
  8. Writing and editorial skills. As a writer myself, I was interested to see this listed. Hunt points out that there are writing skills that just didn’t exist before there was a Web. But in today’s webby world, skills such as using keywords and search engine optimization (SEO) tools that make a site easier to find, might come naturally to writers and editors. Or they might need to be learned.
  9. SEO. Even if writing isn’t your thing, you can still boost SEO by focusing on branding, and that’s where a lot of design, graphics, and HTML/CSS skills can  help. A designer who thinks about the big picture will create a website that will be found and seen, and that is what SEO is all about.
  10. Business sense. Hunt is blunt. “Frankly, if you’re going to make a go of being a web designer, whether you’re self-employed, freelance, part of a small company or large corporation, you’ll benefit from knowing the basics of how business works, and how to make sensible guesses when faced with business choices.” Anthem Institute understands this. Going to a Career Fair? 3 Tips to Make the Most of It!

Have you ever been to a career fair? I haven’t, but I’ve seen stories on the news about them. Imagine about a hundred professionally-dressed people standing in line outside a building waiting for their shot to speak with HR professionals from different companies. And I live in Arizona, so you should probably also imagine them sweating profusely if you want the whole picture.

In all honesty, career fairs are a great tool for job hunters. You get a bunch of employers who are actively hiring right in one place. And if you’re lucky and have done your homework, a good chunk of them are looking for people with your skills and expertise. What could be better?

The thing about career fairs is that showing up is only half of the battle. If you really want to make the most of your career fair experience, you are going to have to do more than just show up. Staffing agency Robert Half International recently shared an article with MSN Careers about this very topic. Their advice boils down to three main things: Prepare, Use Your Time Wisely and Follow Up.

Prepare. Would you go to a job interview without preparing? I think not. At least I hope not. The same things that apply to preparing for your standard job interview apply here as well. Learn about the companies you are interested in and be ready to ask a couple of questions, have plenty of copies of your resume handy, and dress professionally. If you know that it is going to be a busy and fast-paced career fair, Robert Half International suggests writing and memorizing a pitch that’s about the length of a TV commercial. Cover the highlights and what makes you stand out among the competition, but most of all, include how you can benefit the company if they hire you.

Use Your Time Wisely. I think one of the keys to using your time wisely is to remember the point of the career fair. You are there to network and meet with potential employers. You are not there to chat with your friends who are also attending, pick up freebies, and become best friends with the cookie table. Focus on making new connections and presenting yourself in a professional manner and you can’t go wrong.

Follow up. Do you really want to knock it out of the park? Robert Half suggests sending a brief thank-you email to your new contacts to reiterate what you can offer their companies. Just imagine that an employer leaves the career fair with a dozen resumes from potential candidates. They get back to their office and check their email and the first thing they see is a thank-you note from you. That’s going to make an impression. Even if the recruiter gets thank-you emails from five other people too, wouldn’t you rather be on the list of people who did send one over those who didn’t? I know I would.

“I’ve had a much better turnout and better applicants today than I did at a six-hour open house I ran at one of my locations last week,” said Brandi Cooksey, General Manager for Doctor’s ValuVision, after the event.  All ten of the attending employers found qualified applicants to follow up with, and some even made job offers the day of the event!

Skills Employees Need to Succeed in the Workplace

Who better to explain what skills employees need in order to succeed in the workplace than today’s employers and people who are actually in the workforce?

University of Phoenix recently partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to produce: Life in the 21st Century Workforce: A National Perspective. The study combines the results from surveys of employers and workforce employees. The goal was to determine what skills employees need to succeed in the 21st century workplace and how that ties into higher education.

The study shows that 8 in 10 employers surveyed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and 72 percent of workers from the University of Phoenix survey say that a college education is necessary if one wants to be successful in the workplace. Why you ask? Well, at least half of the employers surveyed say that post-secondary education does three main things:

  • Prepares individuals for success in the workplace
  • Provides individuals with core academic knowledge and intellectual skills
  • Provides individuals with the workforce skills and knowledge for success in a specific career

In fact, 53 percent of the employers who were surveyed say that they are having a tough time finding people with the skills, training, and education that they need. This further emphasizes the importance that these employers place on higher education and training.

At the same time, when it comes to getting hired, workers say that it is more than just having the right technical skills and education related to your field.  While these skills are important, there are certain soft skills that are also important.  Soft skills are related to behavioral skills.

The study identifies five soft skills that workers say are most important when it comes to getting hired and being successful in the workplace:

  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills (84%)
  • Critical thinking and problem solving  (82%)
  • Collaboration and team work  (74%)
  • Interpersonal communication  (72%)
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information (69%)
