Top 6 Brain-Boosting Foods for Studying

Eating right is good for both your brain health and overall well-being. There are certain foods that boost your brain power and help you ace exams. Everybody retains information differently, but by having a healthy diet you can be sure that your brain has the fuel to retain and synthesize what you are learning.  Here are top 6 brain boosting foods that you should eat to improve your academic prowess:

Top 6 Brain-Boosting Foods for Studying

1. Oily Fish (Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids)

Omega 3 are healthy fats, crucial for the development of your brain and stabilize your mood. Your body does not make the essential fatty acids by itself, and you need to obtain them through diet. Good sources include oily fish like salmon, trout, herring, sardines, mackerel, scallops, shrimp, and some nuts and seeds. Oily fish has the most effective fatty acids naturally present in it, namely EPA and DHA. Walnut and flaxseeds are also rich in EPA and DHA.

2. Whole grains (Complex Carbohydrates)

Whole grains, which are rich in fiber, and starches are the main source of energy called complex carbohydrates. Your brain cannot function without energy. Complex carbohydrates are fiber rich that slows down the supply of glucose to your blood. You don’t need sugar-rich foods that give you a surge of energy by fast absorption of glucose and then your energy levels fall quickly too. Whole grains give you slow and steady supply of energy, all day long. This helps you stay alert the whole day and concentrate better. Good sources of complex carbohydrates are whole-grain breads, brown rice, pastas, cereals, crackers, pancakes, and waffles.

3. Blueberries (Antioxidants)

Antioxidants protect you from brain damage, such as memory loss, etc. Blueberries are extremely rich in antioxidants. Other good berries that contain antioxidants are strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. They help you fight and delay memory loss. Antioxidants are present in various other fruits and vegetables — the brighter their color, the richer they are in nutrients.

4. Eggs (Choline)

Egg contains choline, a nutrient that greatly helps your brain develop and perform properly by staying connected with all of your body parts. Having an egg or two for breakfast ensures you feel full all day. Choline especially is the ultimate food that helps your brains cells grow. Aside from eggs, good sources of proteins include tofu, lean beef, yogurt, buckwheat, brussels sprouts, beans, cauliflower, and broccoli.

5. Nuts and Seeds (Vitamin E)

Nuts and seeds are rich in vitamin E. Regular intake of vitamin E in small amounts helps to prevent age- related memory loss. Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, olives, seeds, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, brown rice, eggs and asparagus are good sources of Vitamin E.

6. Mango (Vitamin B6 & C)

Mango is a great source of iron; vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Iron is crucial for normal brain function. Vitamin B6 helps the cognitive development of your brain. Vitamin C is also necessary for healthy brain function. One serving of mango daily during exams is likely to boost your grades to a great extent.

If you’re looking to boost your grades, eating healthy is crucial for your success as a student at Anthem Education.

5 Tips for Starting a New Career

It is said that you are never too old to start a new career. If  you want to venture forth in uncharted territory, then you must find your career passion. A career change can take place during any point of your life. Sometimes, things do not go as planned and you are faced with circumstances where you realize that the career you chose for yourself might not have been the correct choice after all.

When this understanding hits you, you can chose to do one of two things. Either you continue pursuing your career in the same profession while remaining dissatisfied, or you can take a risk and completely change your career. There are many instances when a young individual is confused about how to start his or her career.

If you are faced with either of the above situations, Anthem Education has outlined 5 tips for starting a new career.

Know Your Passion

Every person is passionate about something. Find out what that is, and make a list of all the things you love to do. Don’t think about jobs just yet; think about the thing you would like to do for the rest of your life. Once you’ve answered this question then determine what are the required skills and talents for that position. New Career Path

Job Possibilities

Once you have determined what you are passionate about then reflect on your training and experience. If you have the required skills, expertise and talent, then imagine the different jobs where that talent will be useful. Decide the jobs which can be aligned with your passion, list them out, and then choose one which you think would be the best occupation for you.

Gaining Experience

If you have the passion but not the experience, then think about possible ways of gaining relevant exposure. For example, you have a passion for helping people, so you can become a professional nurse. And if you have never had the required experience, then you can volunteer at a hospital and gain it. It is that simple. All you have to do is take the first step.

Search for Information

If, even after following the aforementioned tips, you are confused, then you should search the internet. Gather information from any other source as well, whether it is newspapers, magazines, gazettes, or even libraries. Find out all you can about the occupations which match your passion, and then decide which one you would like to opt for.

Acquire Training

Sometimes, you may have the passion but not the talent to do the job. If this is the case, don’t get discouraged, instead take charge and enroll yourself in a training program that will help you gain the relevant skills. Becoming an apprentice is another effective way you can train and hone your skills. Get training until you are completely satisfied with your skill level.

These are the five tips that can greatly help you start a new career or make a career change. You’re already halfway there, now all you have to do is take a leap of faith.

Florida Career College Hosts Event for Locks of Love

Florida Career College and Local Girl Scout Troop Host event for Locks of Love

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. (November 12, 2013) – Florida Career College (FCC) cosmetology students and instructors and members of local Girl Scout troop 1743 recently gathered at the FCC-Lauderdale Lakes campus’ Spa At The College to host an event benefiting Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

More than 40 people attended the “Hope for Hair” event, which was open to the public, and eighteen attendees volunteered to have six or more inches of their hair cut off to be donated to Locks of Love.

“At Florida Career College, we believe in the power of community engagement and constantly encourage our students to find opportunities to get involved,” said FCC-Lauderdale Lakes Spa At The College Manager Donna Gilmer. “Locks of Love is a worthy organization, and we’re glad that we had such a great turnout.”

During the event, attendees enjoyed music, food and refreshments, and donors received a variety of beauty services following their haircuts, including hair styling and color treatments conducted by advanced FCC cosmetology students and supervised by licensed instructors.

FCC organized Hope for Hair with Girl Scout troop Senior Patrol leader Angelina Herrera, 18, who earned the “Gold Award” during the event for her outstanding leadership skills and community service efforts. In order to be eligible to receive the award, Girl Scouts are required to design, organize and implement a community service project of their own.

“It was such a pleasure working with the Florida Career College team to support Locks of Love’s mission to help restore the self-esteem and confidence of children who are suffering from hair loss and are afraid to face the world,” said Herrera. “There’s no better way to benefit such a great cause than to bring the whole community together for an event that’s celebratory and fun.”

In addition to this project, Herrera and her troop organize and participate in a number of service projects throughout the community, such as Special Olympics for special needs students, camp-outs and community-wide clean-up days.

FCC is a career-focused school offering curricula that teach practical and applicable skills for specific industries. stress relief

5 Facts about Student Stress and How You Can Fight It

Stress… If there was ever a five-letter word that you should avoid, this is it.

I know that a lot of times stress feels unavoidable, especially during the holidays. And I know that students these days are busier than ever before. I’m sure many of you are juggling family responsibilities, part-time or full-time jobs, and other things that take up your time and efforts. Nonetheless, the negative effects that stress has on your body make it something you should fight as strongly as you do the common cold or any other illness or disease.

In an article for the Washington Post, writer Jeff Goelitz says that today’s students are under “massive amounts of stress.” As a co-author of a new book, The College De-Stress Handbook: Keeping Cool Under Pressure from the Inside Out, Goelitz has done a lot of research on the effects that stress has on college students. In an effort to shed light on the damage it can have, Goelitz shares five important facts about stress that all college students should know.

1. Stress can make smart people do stupid things. Did you know that stress affects your brain? Goelitz writes that stress hinders an important part of the brain that influences your decision-making. It can also have a negative impact on other mental abilities as well, which is why it is so important to acknowledge your stress when you feel it and do everything you can to eliminate it (more on that later).

2. The human body doesn’t discriminate between a big stressful event and a little one. You know how people categorize a lie, right? A little lie is usually called a white lie or maybe a fib. A big lie doesn’t really need adjectives because the results of telling a big lie, and the affects it has on you and others pretty much shows that it was a big lie.  It’s not like that with stress. To your body, there is no such thing as little white stress. “Any stressful experience will create a cascade of 1,400 biochemical events in your body,” writes Goelitz. And if you don’t get rid of it, he says, you can start to experience the results of these events, such as premature aging and lack of energy. Yikes.

3. Stress can become your new norm. When you wake up in the morning, it’s the start of a new day. No one has cut you off in traffic yet, or hurt your feelings. The work hasn’t piled up yet and yesterday’s deadlines are behind you. You should wake up feeling fresh and rejuvenated, not stressed. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Do you wake up feeling that way? If you don’t, and you find yourself feeling stressed more often than not, it’s possible that you’ve been stressed so much that your body sees that as your emotional norm. Goelitz writes that high stress can turn dangerous if it goes unchecked, and it can increase your risk for health problems, such as depression, sleep problems, memory impairment, obesity, digestive problems and more.

Need some relief from stress?

Feel like controlling your stress now? Well, I’ve got good news. Read on!

4. Stress can be controlled. Yay! Obviously with all the negative effects that stress can have, it makes sense that there would be studies done on how to control it. According to Goelitz, the key is “emotional-refocusing techniques.” This means realizing when you are feeling stress then refocusing your emotions on something more positive. Goelitz references a technique from the HeartMath website where you slow your thoughts and breathing, and focus on your heartbeat and positive feelings. Think it sounds kind of funny? Well, I bet it’s not as funny as wrinkles, sleep deprivation and depression. Consider giving it a shot! It seems to me that this is one of those times when the potential benefits would make it worth a try.

If you are a student at an Anthem Education school or college, and are feeling pressure from those outside stressors in your life, you are not alone and we want to help.
