Florida Career College Hosts Event for Locks of Love

Florida Career College and Local Girl Scout Troop Host event for Locks of Love

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. (November 12, 2013) – Florida Career College (FCC) cosmetology students and instructors and members of local Girl Scout troop 1743 recently gathered at the FCC-Lauderdale Lakes campus’ Spa At The College to host an event benefiting Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

More than 40 people attended the “Hope for Hair” event, which was open to the public, and eighteen attendees volunteered to have six or more inches of their hair cut off to be donated to Locks of Love.

“At Florida Career College, we believe in the power of community engagement and constantly encourage our students to find opportunities to get involved,” said FCC-Lauderdale Lakes Spa At The College Manager Donna Gilmer. “Locks of Love is a worthy organization, and we’re glad that we had such a great turnout.”

During the event, attendees enjoyed music, food and refreshments, and donors received a variety of beauty services following their haircuts, including hair styling and color treatments conducted by advanced FCC cosmetology students and supervised by licensed instructors.

FCC organized Hope for Hair with Girl Scout troop Senior Patrol leader Angelina Herrera, 18, who earned the “Gold Award” during the event for her outstanding leadership skills and community service efforts. In order to be eligible to receive the award, Girl Scouts are required to design, organize and implement a community service project of their own.

“It was such a pleasure working with the Florida Career College team to support Locks of Love’s mission to help restore the self-esteem and confidence of children who are suffering from hair loss and are afraid to face the world,” said Herrera. “There’s no better way to benefit such a great cause than to bring the whole community together for an event that’s celebratory and fun.”

In addition to this project, Herrera and her troop organize and participate in a number of service projects throughout the community, such as Special Olympics for special needs students, camp-outs and community-wide clean-up days.

Anthem Institute Student Succeeds Despite Complex Learning Disabilities.

In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, the photographs of Monroe Township resident Kenneth Teore, a 22-year-old student at Anthem Institute with Autism Spectrum Disorder, were on exhibit at the Monroe Township Public Library during the month of April.

 Despite his complex learning disabilities and high-functioning autism, Teore is excelling in the Graphic Design and Animation program at Anthem Institute’s North Brunswick campus. Teore is a gifted nature photographer and his education is helping him gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue his goals, which include working for National Geographic in film and photography.

“Kenny sleeps, eats and drinks his program of studies,” said his mother Joananne Teore. “We are so grateful for Kenny’s incredible opportunity to attend Anthem, where not only does he have an excellent curriculum-based education, but also wonderful instructors who have enlightened him about reading social cues and enabled him to be successful by meeting his needs using assistive technology.”

Through his exhibit, featuring a display of more than 20 photographs, Teore’s goal was to educate others about his experiences with autism, dyslexia and dysgraphia.

“Kenny’s story is just one example of how we strive to work with each and every one of our students to help them succeed,” said Maria Veglia, Executive Director at Anthem Institute in North Brunswick. “We have full confidence that Kenny will successfully complete his program and look forward to helping him establish a fulfilling career.”

Anthem Institute’s Graphic Design and Animation diploma program gives students hands-on experience with Graphic Design Industry Standard applications. Students take courses in basic design, digital imaging and print, 3D modeling and 3D animation. They learn to use the same packages and tools as graphic design professionals, including 3D Studio Max and Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite and are introduced to standard markup/scripting languages such as HTML, PHP, CSS ActionScript and MySQL.

Taught by graphic design and web professionals, students can receive academic advising from professional education staff, which also arrange for tutoring services when needed and help organize study groups. Program graduates can compete for different kinds of entry-level positions in the graphic design field, including web designer or developer, flash animator, Photoshop specialist or multimedia designer or specialist.

Florida Career College Donates to Urban League of Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Fort Lauderdale-based Florida Career College (FCC), a career-focused school offering curricula that teach practical and applicable skills for specific industries, marked a new corporate partnership with the Urban League of Broward County with a $25,000 donation to purchase computer equipment, as well as two scholarships. The Urban League is dedicated to assisting African Americans in the achievement of economic equality.

Prior to the ceremonial check presentation, FCC management took a tour of the Urban League’s new 28,000 square foot state-of-the-art Community Empowerment Center, designed to serve as a place where parents, youth and residents can come to access programming, enjoy social events and mobilize others in the community on a variety of issues affecting their lives. The facility includes rooms for meetings, events and programs, including, a computer lab, class-rooms for financial literacy, workforce development and other educational training, as well as private counseling rooms.

“Florida Career College is committed to making a difference in the lives of others through offering students practical career training,” said David Knobel, president and Chief Executive Officer of Florida Career College. “One of the biggest barriers to education is the financial aspect. We hope that this donation and partnership will make a significant impact on the services that the Urban League needs every day to get members of the local community on track for a successful career and overall brighter future.”

5 Facts about Student Stress and How You Can Fight It

Stress… If there was ever a five-letter word that you should avoid, this is it.

I know that a lot of times stress feels unavoidable, especially during the holidays. And I know that students these days are busier than ever before. I’m sure many of you are juggling family responsibilities, part-time or full-time jobs, and other things that take up your time and efforts. Nonetheless, the negative effects that stress has on your body make it something you should fight as strongly as you do the common cold or any other illness or disease.

In an article for the Washington Post, writer Jeff Goelitz says that today’s students are under “massive amounts of stress.” As a co-author of a new book, The College De-Stress Handbook: Keeping Cool Under Pressure from the Inside Out, Goelitz has done a lot of research on the effects that stress has on college students. In an effort to shed light on the damage it can have, Goelitz shares five important facts about stress that all college students should know.

1. Stress can make smart people do stupid things. Did you know that stress affects your brain? Goelitz writes that stress hinders an important part of the brain that influences your decision-making. It can also have a negative impact on other mental abilities as well, which is why it is so important to acknowledge your stress when you feel it and do everything you can to eliminate it (more on that later).

2. The human body doesn’t discriminate between a big stressful event and a little one. You know how people categorize a lie, right? A little lie is usually called a white lie or maybe a fib. A big lie doesn’t really need adjectives because the results of telling a big lie, and the affects it has on you and others pretty much shows that it was a big lie.  It’s not like that with stress. To your body, there is no such thing as little white stress. “Any stressful experience will create a cascade of 1,400 biochemical events in your body,” writes Goelitz. And if you don’t get rid of it, he says, you can start to experience the results of these events, such as premature aging and lack of energy. Yikes.

3. Stress can become your new norm. When you wake up in the morning, it’s the start of a new day. No one has cut you off in traffic yet, or hurt your feelings. The work hasn’t piled up yet and yesterday’s deadlines are behind you. You should wake up feeling fresh and rejuvenated, not stressed. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Do you wake up feeling that way? If you don’t, and you find yourself feeling stressed more often than not, it’s possible that you’ve been stressed so much that your body sees that as your emotional norm. Goelitz writes that high stress can turn dangerous if it goes unchecked, and it can increase your risk for health problems, such as depression, sleep problems, memory impairment, obesity, digestive problems and more.

4. Stress can be controlled. Yay! Obviously with all the negative effects that stress can have, it makes sense that there would be studies done on how to control it. According to Goelitz, the key is “emotional-refocusing techniques.” This means realizing when you are feeling stress then refocusing your emotions on something more positive. Goelitz references a technique from the HeartMath website where you slow your thoughts and breathing, and focus on your heartbeat and positive feelings. Think it sounds kind of funny? Well, I bet it’s not as funny as wrinkles, sleep deprivation and depression. Consider giving it a shot! It seems to me that this is one of those times when the potential benefits would make it worth a try.
