Florida Career College Constitution Day

Florida Career College Celebrates Constitution Day

Constitution Day (September 17) marks the anniversary of the Constitution’s formal approval by the Constitutional Congress in 1787. The Congress was made up of representatives from the 13 states that were the entire U.S. at the time. The event created a central federal government to replace a looser confederation of states. The week of September 13-19 is formally observed by colleges and universities throughout the nation with educational events about the Constitution. 2

Students and staff at Florida Career College kicked off the festivities by participating in a Constitution Day Trivia Challenge hosted by the Library Department. The students, who answered correctly, received “Smarties” for being so Constitution- Smart!

The Student Ambassadors and the Library department decorated the student break area with red, white and blue banners and with an over-sized replica of the U.S. Constitution. Students also received a scrolled replica of the original U.S. Constitution and quill pens as souvenirs to commemorate the occasion. 3

Here are 5 tips from Florida Career College for setting goals to advance your career to the next level:

1. Set Reasonable Goals

Primarily, the reason why people are unable to achieve their goals is because they set unrealistic goals. For your goals to be a success, you should keep them manageable. For example, don’t promise yourself to land your dream job with the perfect salary on your first try. Instead aim to get several job interviews related to the kind of job that you would enjoy doing. This way you are being practical about your job opportunities, while still working towards getting your dream job.

2. Be specific

Your career goal should be specific. Clearly define what you want to achieve in measurable and quantifiable terms. This is important so that you may be able to track your performance and motivate yourself to work in the right direction. So next time, do not resolve to be a better networker. Rather work on building a single contact that is worth your while, or try a new technique of networking.

3. Set deadlines and milestones

Precisely set dates and timelines for your goals to keep track of your success or falling behind. Deadlines help you move in the correct direction, keep working to achieve the goals and keep motivating yourself in case you fall behind.

4. Communicate Well

Good performance is important to get noticed and receive appreciation. But, what is more important is communication to your superiors what your goals are and where do you want yourself reach with all your efforts. Try to create win-win situations for yourself and your organization, so that when the organization progresses you progress. Remember, managers cannot read your minds. You have to tell them exactly in what concrete manner you would like to be appreciated and also keep asking them for pointers to continuously improve your performance.

5. Go easy on yourself

Obviously, there will be times when you will get off the track or fall behind. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you are failing. This just means you need to reevaluate to see what you are not doing right, reset your plans and then pick up your pace again. Remember, those who never quit, never fail!
With that said, career progress is not a job that just happens by chance. Rather, it is made possible by a well thought out, planned and worked constantly in the desired direction effort. So, set your goals wisely to reach where you want to be. And, meanwhile don’t forget to enjoy yourself through the journey!

Discover 5 Ways to Network While Still in School

If you are still in school and think that you have all the time for networking, then you are putting your career at stake. They say, “It’s never too late to start,” but in case of career networking, it’s never too early! In fact, school years are probably the best time when you can network with your friends, teachers and career center advisers and lay the foundation of your new career. This blog post may help you discover some effective ways to network while you are still in school:

Widen Your Network

Don’t limit your social network to your dorm and classroom. You have to step out of your bubble and interact with your seniors. They have gone through all the phases you are currently going through- they can guide you in a better way to deal with your problems. Plus, it is easier to share your thoughts with seniors than with teachers. No matter how friendly your teachers are, you can’t have the same bonding with them as you have with your friends. Discuss with your seniors about internships, school projects and other ways to improve your profile.

Be Active on Social Forums

Social sites like LinkedIn provide a feasible platform to students to interact with employers. Make an impressive resume: highlight your certifications, academic achievements, skills and professional objectives. Secondly, get connected with organizations that you find impressive. Professional connections can help you land a job once you graduate. Be selective when connecting with business organizations, and make sure only to connect with renowned organizations to safeguard your personal identity.

Use Your Acquaintances as Resources

Use your friends, family and acquaintances as resources. Make the most of social gatherings, where you can meet a number of people with different professional backgrounds. Share your professional goals and interest with them and discuss with them about your future career plans. They have the right amount of hands-on experience to guide you about viable job opportunities. Though you have to be outstanding at your studies to get excellent job opportunities, you also need to develop professional skills to stand out in the crowd- and your family, friends and acquaintances can help you with it.

Attend Events

Don’t be a book worm- participate in extracurricular activities and personality-building events like debate competitions, seminars, etc. This will not only develop your communication skills, but also boost your confidence. Events like alumni dinners, where you can meet former schoolmates can be a good opportunity to widen your network beyond your classroom.

Interact with Teachers

Teachers usually have professional connections and can help you get strong referrals. No matter how good your grades are, you need career references to strengthen your profile. Having a friendly bond with your teachers can help you get good referrals that can support your resume.

Now that you know about career networking make the most of your college years to get a good job as soon as you finish your studies.

Five Study Habits to Help You Focus

If you maintain your focus on a task, you can easily accomplish it in the most effective manner. From doing assignments to studying for a test, you will be done with it before you know it. Staying focused also enhances and improves you personal and professional life. It helps you to come up with an effective solution for any problem. If you have problems maintaining your focus or want to enhance your focusing ability, here are five effective study habits to help you focus more:

 1.    Organize Your Study Space

  • This holds true for students as well as working professionals.
  • If you have a neat and organized space, you will be able to focus more.
  • Make sure there is nothing on the table that can distract you like your favorite novel or video game or your crafting supplies and especially your cell phone!
  • Clean your desk and only keep the necessary items you need to study.

2.    Breaking Big Tasks Into Small Ones

  • People tend to procrastinate when they have several long-term tasks to accomplish.
  • The best way to resolve this problem is to break your tasks into smaller tasks that are easily manageable.
  • When you break a big task into shorter goals, you will find it easier to keep on accomplishing those small tasks and gradually moving towards finishing the entire task.
  • This helps you to concentrate more and stay motivated.

3.    Reward Yourself

  • When you accomplish a certain task, reward yourself. This will also help you stay motivated.
  • Take a 10 to 20 minute break after each task or eat your favorite snack.
  • Plan your rewards initially. When you know that there is a treat waiting for you at the end of the task, you will be more focused on finishing it.
  • Promise yourself that you will play your favorite video game or read your favorite book after you have accomplished the task at hand.

4.    Schedule a Study Time

  • Making a proper study schedule is the best method to stay focused.
  • When you have a daily study plan it gradually becomes a habit.
  • Make sure you select a time when you are fresh and energized. This way your mind is focus and ready to retain information.

5.    Eliminate Distractions

People get easily distracted without even realizing it. When doing research online for your assignment, don’t waste time going on websites that don’t pertain to the topic that you are researching. It is easy to sway your attention to other tasks when you are not into the task that you have to do.

Determine what distracts you and stay away from it during your study time. For example, if you do find interesting topics similar to the one you are researching bookmark them and read them after you have completed the assignment. If your cell phone distracts you, turn it off. If people or noise distract you, go study at a library or at a quiet place.

Oily fish has the most effective fatty acids naturally present in it, namely EPA and DHA. Walnut and flaxseeds are also rich in EPA and DHA.

Having an egg or two for breakfast ensures you feel full all day. Choline especially is the ultimate food that helps your brains cells grow. Aside from eggs, good sources of proteins include tofu, lean beef, yogurt, buckwheat, brussels sprouts, beans, cauliflower, and broccoli.

5. Nuts and Seeds (Vitamin E)

The Best Test-Taking Techniques

Taking tests is the nightmare of almost every student!

How many times have you woken up in the middle of the night because of a nightmare you had where you took a test and failed miserably?

The idea of having to take tests leads to many students to wake-up in the middle of the night in a state of panic. Students  become so stressed out that they mess up their exams even though they prepared so hard for it. The key to passing  any exam is to plan ahead and to adopt test-taking techniques that will work best for you.   So, are you ready to ace your exams? To help you get started, here are several tips for you.

Adopt A Can Do Attitude!

It is vital for students to have a positive attitude before taking any big exam. With a can do attitude, you will more likely to ace your exams. If you think that you will fail, you will fail. If you think that you will pass, you will pass.

Work Out A Study Schedule

By following a daily study schedule, you will be tackling your course material and exam topics easily and methodically. Learning takes time, and by planning, you will feel less stress and anxiety.

It is not fun having to cram a ton of information the night before a big exam, and feeling nervous and scared about failing the exam. Therefore, give yourself enough time to study if you want the guarantee of passing your exams.

Enjoy A Good Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for battling any big exam. In order to emerge victoriously from your exam it is vital that you’re well-rested and relaxed.  Trying to cram the night before the test is not a good idea, and will only increase your stress levels. Learning takes time and cramming large chunks of information will only confuse you during your exam.

If you didn’t study at all, than cramming the night before your exam is not going to help you learn weeks of information. Learn to face defeat and accept the fact that without proper studying and planning you’ll will not pass any exam.

Be Attentive And Alert

When you finally sit down to take the test, make sure to read the instructions carefully so you don’t miss anything important on your exam. Don’t rush, read every question and multiple choice answers carefully. Pay attention to these following words used on your test questions: all, always, none, never, except and only. Before looking at the answers, try to answer the question in your mind. Don’t confuse yourself by over-analyzing the question.

Manage Your Time

After reading the instructions, calculate how much time you should spend on each question and act accordingly. If you don’t know an answer, skip it. Continue answering all the questions you do know, and tackle the tricky and difficult questions later. Don’t break your flow at the beginning of the test.

Stay relaxed, if you start feeling nervous take a few deep breaths. Don’t worry about how fast other people are finishing the test, only focus on your own test. Good Luck.

Becoming a Surgical Technologist

Can you imagine a surgical room without a surgical technologist? Me neither. The first surgical technologists were born and bred out of the military. Since nurses were not allowed anywhere near the battlefield, the military trained “medics” to work alongside surgeons. However, it was not after the two world wars of the twentieth century that sparked the need for trained operating room personnel. The role of the “operating room nurse” and “medic” evolved into a separate allied health career, now known as Surgical Technology.

Surgical Technologists- Duties and Responsibilities

Did you know surgical technologists are also called surgical technicians or operating room technicians? These highly skilled allied health professionals fulfill many important duties and responsibilities required for a successful surgery.

Before a surgical procedure, the surgical technologist (ST) is responsible for ensuring the proper arrangement and availability of all necessary equipment needed for the patient’s surgical procedure. They ensure that each surgical equipment and monitoring device is connected and working properly. The surgical technologist is also responsible for prepping the patient for surgery.

During the surgery, one of the (ST) duties is to pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant. After the surgical procedure, the (ST) gathers and secures all contaminated instruments, cleans and disinfects the surgical instruments and preps the operating room for the next procedure. sat

Essential Traits

In order for a surgical technologist to be a valued team member, he or she must be able to maintain focused and calm during extremely stressful, emergency situations. Other highly regarded traits are the ability to listen, to follow directions; one wrong move can put a patient in critical condition. The aspirant surgical technologist must also have a strong desire to contribute to society and to help others feel better. Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful surgical technologist?

Educational Requirements

To become a skilled surgical technician, a person must obtain post-secondary education. Training for surgical technology can take ten months to two years to complete. Depending on the school the individual decides to attend, they will either receive a diploma of completion or an associate degree. Students in the surgical technology program at our Anthem Education schools learn hands-on training in areas such as: sterilization techniques and instrumentation set-up, and learn about surgical instruments and supplies. Students are also trained in basic surgical skills and laboratory procedures that support operating room functions. If you have any questions about the healthcare field or the surgical technology program, contact one of our campuses, we would love to get you on the right career track.

Career Outlook

A surgical technologist, besides enjoying a place of significance in the healthcare industry, also promises an increased number of job opportunities in the healthcare sector for the future.

Industry statistics and experts (BLS) have predicted a growth in the job outlook of the surgical technologist job position, and have estimated at around 30% growth in the sector for this career. This estimation of 30% growths has been predicted from 2012 to 2022, with the percentage increase in job opportunities greater than in other sectors of the industry.

If you are passionate about pursuing a career in the healthcare industry, and wish for a career with significant opportunities, then a career as a surgical technologist might just be what you seek.

The Value of Medical Assistant Technicians

Did you know medical assisting was an informal career until the mid-20th century? In the first half of the twentieth century, doctors would hire assistants and would train them on the job. Everything changed during the 1960s and 1970s, the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) focused on further professionalizing the medical assistant career. They established medical assistant training and certification programs and worked with the American Medical Association to develop curriculum standards. Most physicians consider medical assistants critical partners that can increase the overall productivity of their offices.

Medical Assistants Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a medical assistant technician vary and are subject to change depending upon the needs and requirements of the employer.

Duties of a Medical Assistant:

  • Takes the patient’s health history and measures their vital signs.
  • Helps the physician or nurse with routine patient examinations.
  • Gives patient injections as directed by a doctor.
  • Prepares patient’s blood for laboratory results.

Medical assistant technicians have significant value in the industry due to their ability to provide a variety of competent services to assist in the efficient workflow and patient management for their employers. This job role has significant value for someone looking to get into the healthcare field.

Promising Job Opportunities

According to the BLS, the need for medical assistants in the healthcare sector is projected to experience a rapid increase, with the projected percentage being around 29%. This is higher than the industry average for other professions and careers, and thus depicts the high value of this career in the healthcare sector.

For an individual looking for a new career, choosing to become a medical assistant can prove to be a stepping ladder into the healthcare industry. The Do’s and Don’ts for Successful Studying

Effective learning requires time and practice. If you are only memorizing, then you are not skillfully synthesizing and applying the information correctly. While some students may appear to possesses a super-brain with a great capacity for storing and generating information. However, the majority of students need more time to study for fully storing and processing the newly learned information.

It’s very easy to tell yourself “I’ll study later; I still have two weeks till my next test.” Studying can be a rather grueling exercise for many students, but it doesn’t have to be if you follow these tips by the staff of Anthem College.

Do Plan for Studying

Studying is an easy task to postpone if you don’t include it in your daily activities. If you want to ace your exams, then schedule several hours a week for studying and school work. Organize your schedule around your schoolwork and study time. Stick with this routine every week. Don’t just spontaneously say, “I think I’ll study today.” Studying in a haphazard manner is going to produce meager results for you. Remember, school is an investment for your future, and you want to get the most out of your investment.

Learn to reward yourself for sticking to your study schedule. This could be anything from going out with friends to watching an hour of television. Using a reward system will reinforce the importance of your grades and schoolwork. Your biggest motivator should be finishing college and getting the career you have always wanted. Just think every time you procrastinate the only person you’re cheating is yourself.

Don’t Procrastinate

Procrastination seems to be a default setting for most people. Have you noticed you tend to procrastinate more when you have a big test or project coming up? Some people tend to put off doing particular tasks when they can’t control the outcome. The reason you tend to procrastinate more during finals is that you are afraid of failing. However, if you don’t give yourself plenty of time to study unfortunately, you will fail. Don’t fall victim to your irrational fears, take control of your mind and motivate yourself to study.

Remember only you can break the vicious procrastination cycle. If you’re studying at home, don’t turn on the television or your computer unless you need it for studying. Hide your phone or tablet until you are done studying. You don’t need the temptation of logging into Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and wasting precious hours you could have used for studying. Don’t talk yourself into doing unnecessary tasks. For example, deleting your email from the account you never use, or doing laundry when you have plenty of clean clothes. Don’t let your fears or excuses be more important than your dreams. Your dreams won’t come true unless you work hard to achieve them.

Don’t Compare Yourself

Don’t compare your studying routine to the studying routine of your friends. Everyone is different and what works for them, may not work for you; everyone has different styles of learning. Perhaps, you learn best by hearing things aloud; you like participating in class discussion, and you rather study in a group then alone. However, your friend is a visual learner; dislikes class participation, and prefers creating diagrams and flashcards. Many people combine different learning styles; the key is to discover what works best for you. If you are now wondering what is your learning styleclick here.

Don’t forget to keep a balanced diet and to get plenty of rest. If you are having a problem with your study material don’t be shy ask your instructor or classmates for help. Your college success depends on you. Always ask questions and seek out your campus resources if you are having trouble with your schoolwork.

Tips for Eating Healthy While Going to School

When you’re in school regardless of your age, you’re sure to skimp on your diet. Whether it’s because of lack of time to prepare better meals or you’re just too busy that you skip meals. The fact is that regardless of why you’re not eating healthy, your body needs adequate nutrition in order to maintain a healthy immune system and to keep stress at bay. If you’re only surviving on caffeine and junk food eventually your immune system will weaken, and you’ll damage your health. Healthy eating is not about dieting or food restrictions, but it’s about eating the right amount of nutrients for sustaining energy and focus throughout your day. If you’re looking to eat healthy while going to school, Anthem Education has outline several tips you can follow:

Tips for Eating Healthy While Going to School

Pre-Plan Your Meals

If you have school or work in the morning, prep your lunch the night before. This cuts down on your stress of having to make your lunch in the morning when you’re already in a rush to hurry off to your class or job. For a quick breakfast meal, make a Greek-yogurt and fruit smoothie and drink it while you’re driving or waiting for the bus. If you’re looking for healthy, and inexpensive meal options check out these lunch ideas from WebMd.

Use Healthy Ingredients

When it comes to making lunches, a lot of people tend to go for junk food or food options that are not the healthiest for them. A peanut butter sandwich is not exactly the healthiest option, but you can easily swap the peanut butter filling for a turkey slice or an egg salad. You can also slice up some lettuce, and tomatoes to balance out your sandwich with some veggies. Your new and improved sandwich will not only be healthier but also more filling. If you want to feel energized and focus in class or at work eat lunches that are high in protein.

Pick Healthy Meal Options

If you absolutely have no time to make your lunch, make sure your buying healthy food options instead of just pizza and hamburgers. Remember to look for options that provide an adequate balance of protein, veggies and whole grains. If you’re going to eat a couple of slices of  pizza, order it with veggies, or get a small side-salad. If you’re going to eat burgers and fries, substitute the fries for a salad. Instead of eating cookies or candy, buy a piece of fruit. It’s not hard to eat healthy, but it requires your commitment and openness to try new food options.

Stay Hydrated

Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout your classes. Don’t drink soft drinks or sodas since they’re not very hydrating. They might quench your thirst but 10- 15 minutes later; you might find yourself thirsty again. When you’re feeling thirsty, you might not realize it but your body slows down and you may feel groggy or tired. Luckily, the solution is simple: Drink more water, or milk, or natural juices.

Healthy eating is all about dedication and planning, and you should think about this process as something that requires your daily commitment, if you approach the changes gradually, you’ll be eating healthy before you know it.

If you are looking to get into the healthcare field, and would love to be where the action is—in the operation room, then keep reading to find out what it takes to be a great surgical technologist.

Responsibilities of a Surgical Technician

A surgical technologist or surgical technician is responsible for supervising the preparation of operating rooms prior to surgery. They practice extreme care to ensure that all the surgical instruments are properly sterilized for the operating room. They supervise the working of the junior operating room staff and assist the surgeon during the surgical procedure.  A surgical technician is a valuable asset to surgeons in the operating room and they must be able to maintain a sharp eye to detail and composure during long operations.

Get the Proper Training

In order to become a successful surgical technologist, an individual must acquire the proper training from an accredited school.  The surgical technologist programs, also called surgical technology at select Anthem Education campuses provide students the knowledge and skill needed to be a valuable member in an operating room. Students in the Surgical Tech program learn the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, receive hands-on training in basic surgical skills and laboratory procedures. Having the proper training and externship experience provides the necessary knowledge and technical skills needed in order to succeed as a surgical technologist.

Important Skills to Learn

An individual, who intends to pursue a successful career as a surgical technologist, needs to adopt certain skills and traits, making it an ideal career choice for someone who is great under pressure. Excellent manual dexterity and arm/hand steadiness are perhaps the most critical skills needed in an operating room, along with communication skills, particularly the ability to comprehend speech and effectively communicate with other team members. Critical thinking, social perceptiveness and information ordering—the ability to order items in a defined format or according to specified rules—are also essential when working in the operating room. The main thing to remember when starting out as a surgical technologist is to work hard and learn as much as possible from the senior doctors and specialists. To make your mark in your job, it is essential to be willing to learn and put into practice all that you were taught in your training.

Employment Outlook for Surgical Technologists

The employment outlook for surgical technologists is strong, with projected growth of about 30% during the next decade. This is considered “much faster than average” growth for a job sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Surgical technologists may advance their careers by specializing in progressively more demanding and more difficult medical specialties. Some of the most challenging would include neurosurgery and cardiac surgery.  If you are truly interested in helping people feel better and are up for a challenge, then entering the surgical technology field might very well be the correct choice for you.

Online Resume

How to Make an Online Resume

Many people think making an online resume is a long and tiring process. In reality, however, it is relatively quick and easy. There are a variety of resources available to help you build a good resume, as an Anthem Education student you can use our online resume portal to guide you through the process of building an effective and impressionable resume.

How to Make an Online Resume

A resume is about putting your personality, skills, expertise, and achievements onto a sheet of paper in such a way that it makes someone want to hire you. It is one of the most important tools for landing a job. A resume is typically the first step in an interview screening. Impressive resumes help you get selected for interviews and help form a favorable impression in the eyes of the interviewer, while a bad one will most likely not get you selected for interviews and makes a bad first impression. Most recruiting practices nowadays involve submitting your resume online. Many companies have created their own job portals, from which the resumes are submitted, screened, and where qualified candidates are thus selected for interviews.

Highlight Your Skills and Abilities

Some resume creation websites allow you to upload your current resume but others require you to start from scratch. No matter which way you choose to complete your online resume remember that the key to making an impressive resume is through highlighting your skills and abilities! Your resume should not be longer than a page so make sure you are very precise – there is no need to tell a paragraph story when the bottom line of your story only takes one sentence. Use bullet points and different readable fonts to separate out how you are a great fit for the prospective job. Many times an interviewer only glances at your resume for about 30 seconds, so make sure you take advantage of those 30 seconds in yourwriting. Resume

Use Bullet Points to Focus Your Skill Set

Before you begin writing your resume, go through some steps that will make the process more effective. Start by writing down your skill sets. For every skill that you write down write a supporting sentence or bullet point that outlines how you have used that skill set in a past job. Make sure you are very specific with these bullet points explaining what you did, how many people you managed/worked with, how much money you dealt with, etc. Once that is complete make a list of your previous jobs with corresponding dates of employment. From there, assign your skill set bullet points to the job of which they are related to (you may not use all your bullet points in efforts to make your resume one page long, so make sure you choose the skills that most aptly fit the job you are applying for). Remember you are competing with other people for getting a particular job, so make sure your resume sets you apart from everyone else applying for the same position!

Proofread your Resume

Once this is complete and you have organized your information on your resume make sure you proofread the document! Make sure your personal information is correct and at the top of the page. Next make sure all your skills and jobs are represented in reverse chronological order. Then make sure your specific skills are outlined at the bottom of the page (i.e. education, certifications, etc.). Finally, proofread your resume for any spelling and grammar mistakes. This is a big deal as many employers will discount resumes if they see something misspelled or incorrect. To prevent this have a career center advisor from your home campus read over your resume!

Hit Submit

Once you have finished proofing your resume, it is then time to submit it! If you need to send it via email to an employer make sure you save it in a pdf format (to ensure no changes can be made along the hiring process). If you upload it through a company portal, try attaching the file as a pdf for the same reasons as state above. In some instances you will have to copy and paste your resume into a box or break up your resume into different sections. Since your resume is organized as above stated you should have no problem uploading your resume!

After your resume has been submitted, it is time to wait for that interview call. If you do not hear a response within a week it is acceptable to reach out to the company via email and respectfully ask if they have received your resume. In some cases the hiring process is lengthy and depending on the number of candidates they may not have gone through your resume; however, by calling or writing a polite email it will show the company that you are still interested in the position!

Good luck!

Patient Care Technician

Is a Career as a Patient Care Technician Right for You?

Patient Care Technicians have evolved into one of the most highly demanded professionals in the health industry. They are the people who interact, on a regular basis, with the patients and try to gather information essential for their treatment. Patient care technicians provide valuable support to both the patients as well as the medical staff of the hospital. The following are some of the essential duties that PCT’s perform:

Providing Care

The main duty of a patient care technician is to care for the patients and ensure that their stay at the hospital is comfortable. For people who require nursing services at their homes a patient care giver becomes the sole authority who supports, and cares for them. A professional in this field may be required to perform various functions for the betterment of patients like bathe them, change their dressings, help them with daily errands, go out on a stroll with them, or even help them out of bed. Such professionals become the caretakers for the patients and look after their everyday needs.Florida Career College Programs

Monitoring the Progress

Patient care technicians remain with the patients and interact with them more than any of the other staff members. Their main duty requires that they monitor a patient’s progress and report it to the doctor when any serious changes occur. They must keep an eye on the patients’ physical activities, like pulse, vital signs, blood pressure, temperature, inhalation, etc. He or she makes a note of all the changes in the patient’s bodily functions, so that they could be reviewed by the patient later on. Along with this, a patient care technician assists the physician and nurses from taking blood samples, to setting up the required equipment for treatment in the operating rooms.

Educational Requirements

To become a recognized patient care technician, a person must acquire postsecondary education. Once his or her education is complete, he or she must receive a certificate of completion, which serves as proof of his or her qualification. A patient care technician studies courses which give him or her, the knowledge necessary to perform all the procedures as defined by the job requirements.

A person who has passed this course is also eligible to receive a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate, whereby, he or she may also work as a nursing assistant.

Students in the Patient Care Technician program at our Anthem Education schools learn hands-on training in areas such as: respiratory therapy aide and equipment training, use of radiology and basic lab equipments, recording vital signs, and overall patient care.

Important Traits

Patients require care and love; therefore, it is essential for a patient care technician to be humble and kind. He or she must have patience and at the same time must possess the strength required to deal with the tantrums of any patient. For those who are considering becoming professionals in this field, they must remember that communicating clearly and listening to the patient are both crucial roles in making a treatment effective.

If you have any questions about the health field or the Patient Care Technician program, contact Anthem Education. We provide those eager to change their lives with a wide variety of programs, including cosmetology, information technology, allied health, and HVAC.

A career change can take place during any point of your life. Sometimes, things do not go as planned and you are faced with circumstances where you realize that the career you chose for yourself might not have been the correct choice after all.

When this understanding hits you, you can chose to do one of two things. There are many instances when a young individual is confused about how to start his or her career.

If you are faced with either of the above situations, Anthem Education has outlined 5 tips for starting a new career.

Know Your Passion

Every person is passionate about something. Find out what that is, and make a list of all the things you love to do. Don’t think about jobs just yet; think about the thing you would like to do for the rest of your life. Once you’ve answered this question then determine what are the required skills and talents for that position. New Career Path

Job Possibilities

Once you have determined what you are passionate about then reflect on your training and experience. If you have the required skills, expertise and talent, then imagine the different jobs where that talent will be useful. Decide the jobs which can be aligned with your passion, list them out, and then choose one which you think would be the best occupation for you.

Gaining Experience

If you have the passion but not the experience, then think about possible ways of gaining relevant exposure. For example, you have a passion for helping people, so you can become a professional nurse. And if you have never had the required experience, then you can volunteer at a hospital and gain it. It is that simple. All you have to do is take the first step.

Search for Information

If, even after following the aforementioned tips, you are confused, then you should search the internet. Gather information from any other source as well, whether it is newspapers, magazines, gazettes, or even libraries. Acquire Training

Sometimes, you may have the passion but not the talent to do the job. If this is the case, don’t get discouraged, instead take charge and enroll yourself in a training program that will help you gain the relevant skills. Becoming an apprentice is another effective way you can train and hone your skills. Get training until you are completely satisfied with your skill level.

What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants are multi-talented professionals who perform a number of responsibilities not only in a doctor’s office, but also in other healthcare institutions. Most physicians consider medical assistants critical partners that can increase the overall productivity of their offices.

Responsibilities of Medical Assistants

The tasks performed by medical assistants usually depend on the size and location of the healthcare facility  as well as the physician’s area of expertise.

In most small practices, these professionals deal with both clinical and administrative tasks and report directly to either a supervisor or health practitioner. In a large practice, on the other hand, they typically specialize in a specific field and are normally supervised by a department administrator.

Florida Career College Nursing

Career Options for Registered Nurses

When some people think of nurses, they imagine people who do little more than take orders from doctors. In fact, nursing is itself a unique and important medical profession. Nurses tend to be more hands on than other medical professionals and are often directly involved in saving lives. Here’s a quick look at just a few of the possible work environments and careers for registered nurses.

Clinics treat patients much in the same way that hospitals do, except clinics don’t usually keep patients overnight. If you become a registered nurse, you could provide nearby citizens with inoculations and minor treatments as well as help with a wide range of other non-life threatening issues.

Rehabilitation Facilities
In today’s world, there are a lot of reasons why someone might need rehabilitation. Sufferers of drug and alcohol additions, child abuse, and domestic abuse often need medical assistance to get past their traumatic experiences. The work may be tough, but watching people get back on their feet is an extraordinary reward.

Public Health
Though most nurses work to treat health problems as they arise, other nurses try to prevent health problems from occurring in the first place. If you become a registered nurse, you can inform the public of unhealthy habits and help them to adopt healthier diets and activities.

Nursing is a broader field than most people realize. For example, you could use the skills you learn in your nursing program to enter the insurance industry. Health insurance companies are always in need of medical professionals to help with medical coding and claims.

If you’re interested in any of the above fields or work environments, contact Florida Career College. We offer excellent programs in allied health, cosmetology, information technology, and several other lucrative fields.

Is a Career in Residential and Commercial HVAC Repair Right for You?

HVAC systems play a major role in your quality of life. By regulating the temperature inside your home, HVAC systems allow you to live comfortably regardless of weather outside. However, regular maintenance is an important part of keeping your HVAC system working properly, which is why HVAC repair specialists are in such high demand. Here are some factors to consider if you are interested in pursuing a career in residential and commercial HVAC repair:

You Seek Job Security
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the demand for professionals with HVAC repair training will continue to increase. HVAC systems are an integral part of any property, whether it is resident or commercial, and they require regular maintenance in order to operate effectively. Individuals who have the proper training and certification are sure to have a steady supply of work.

You Are Environmentally Aware
HVAC repair is an exciting field that has seen a constant stream of new technology. As energy prices continue to increase and people become more aware of environmental issues, HVAC technicians with training in green energy will be in high demand. HVAC repair technicians with an interest in environmental issues could be particularly useful in a market where consumers are increasingly interested in energy-efficient appliances.

You Enjoy Hands-on Work
HVAC repair, whether residential or commercial, requires manual dexterity and an aptitude for hands-on work. For example, HVAC systems require regular maintenance like air duct cleaning and checks. Furthermore, individuals who have the requisite training can also install alternative heating mechanisms like geothermal heating systems.

Students in the HVAC program learn hands-on training in areas such as: installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and basic design of refrigeration heating and air conditioning systems along with a focus on service operations.  For more information about pursuing a career in residential and commercial HVAC repair, call Florida Career College at 888-852-7272.

Florida Career College Prom Tips

Florida Career College Shares Five Beauty Tips for Prom

Cosmetology Director Theresa Jacobs offers expert advice to help young women have an unforgettable night.

Prom is a milestone event for many high school students. Between finding the perfect dress, corsage and date, there’s an endless array of details for young women to consider when planning their perfect night. Florida Career College’s Cosmetology Director Theresa Jacobs offers these five useful beauty tips for prom that will help prom-goers look and feel their best.

1. Use powder to maintain a glowing complexion. Choose translucent powder instead of heavy foundation to create a radiating look and prevent the “shine” factor in photos.

2. Brighten your lips. Giving your lips a pop of color is a major trend this prom season. For olive complexions, pair your makeup with a rose lip color and for pale complexions, use a peachy or wine shade. Darker complexions look best in golden or plum hues.

3. Stick to classic hairstyles for a timeless look. Avoid elaborate up-dos, complicated styles and trends that will look dated over time. Simple chignons will accentuate your cheekbones and eyes, while loose curls will give you a softer, natural look.

4. Preserve your makeup all night long. Prep your skin by exfoliating and following with a toner before applying primer. Use a sheer, natural-colored shadow as a base before applying eye-makeup, and layer your lip color to achieve an enduring, “stain-like” application. Also, double up on products like mascara and eyeliner and set eyebrows in place with clear brow gel.

5. Choose a nail color that compliments your dress. Gray or nude colors go well with a trendy and funky look, while classic colors, like red or pink, coordinate with more simple styles.

“Prom is a celebration of being on the brink of your future, and every young woman wants to feel beautiful while enjoying this momentous high school experience,” Jacobs said. “While the most important part of the prom experience is having fun and creating long-lasting memories, this special night also calls for dressing up and radiating beauty from head to toe.”

Five Benefits of Pursuing a Career in Nursing

Choosing the right career path can be a daunting experience for students. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employment projections, Registered Nursing (RN) is projected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Florida Career College (FCC) features nursing programs at several of its campuses throughout Florida to meet the demands of this growing industry where students are provided a career-focused education to sufficiently prepare them for immediately entering the workforce.

“At Florida Career College, we strive to continually develop programs according to industry needs in order to prepare our graduates for a successful career,” said Lawrence Avers, Vice President of Student Development at Florida Career College. “Considering that health care is the third largest industry in Florida, we know the future is bright for our nursing students.”

For prospective students interested in pursuing a career in nursing, Florida Career College offers five reasons why this field is an appealing option:

1. Even in economic downturns, nurses enjoy many job prospects and strong job security.

2. A broad spectrum of specialties provides nurses with a variety of career choices that align with their specific areas of interest.

3. Constant scientific and technological advancements enable nurses to continue learning and helping patients in new ways.

4. Nursing requires constant interaction with patients, families and co-workers in a people-oriented environment.

5. Nursing is an opportunity to help others and save lives.

The Nursing program at Florida Career College, offers a two year degree program for RN and a one year degree program for licensed practical nurses transitioning to RN. During the program, students study curriculum developed by experienced nursing faculty and have access to current technology and realistic, high-tech simulation manikins.

Florida Career College Nursing Program

What to Expect from Nursing School

Though thousands of people are still having a hard time finding work, most registered nurses are not. Since everyone gets sick, there will always be an enormous demand for skilled nurses. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects nursing jobs to increase by 26% between 2010 and 2020. Before you can become a nurse, though, you’ll need to attend a sophisticated nursing school. Here’s a brief look at what you can expect:

Hard Work
Like other career college programs, nursing school involves a lot of hard work. How much hard work generally depends on which nursing option you select. For example, many licensed practical nurse (LPN) programs take a year to complete, while registered nurse (RN) programs take two years or more. No matter which nursing program you choose, you’ll find that it’s very difficult to hold a full-time job while attending class.

Varied Studies
Once you get into your nursing program, you’ll be pleased to learn that your studies are quite varied. This is mainly because nurses need to be acquainted with nearly all aspects of human physiology and psychology. During your program, you will study anatomy, nutrition, microbiology, math, pharmacology, and much more. Since medicine is more sophisticated than ever, you’ll find that you’ll leave nursing school a well-rounded individual.

Time Outside the Classroom
Unlike most other career college programs, a nursing program will give you a chance to go out and explore the world beyond the classroom. Much of the average nursing program is spent in an externship, through which aspiring nurses can get hands-on experience. As you spend time at a hospital, public heath office, or other medical facility, you’ll get an excellent idea of what it is to be a nurse.

If you have any questions about nursing or nursing school, contact Florida Career College. We provide those eager to change their lives with a wide variety of programs, including cosmetology, information technology, allied health, massage therapy and HVAC.

9 Do-It-Yourself Tips for Cleaning Your HVAC System

By: Jenna Malone

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), your HVAC system could be costing you an additional $1,000 per season to run, due to dirty coils and clogged filters, it if it is not clean and properly maintained.

“Even though we experience mild seasonal changes in Florida and avoid many of the problems associated with harsh winter conditions, our HVAC systems require maintenance,” said Ivan Smith, Corporate Director of Technical Trades at Florida Career College (FCC). “It is important that we prepare our equipment for the warmer weather in order to keep our cool both financially and physically throughout the warmer spring and soon-to-be summer season.”

Here are nine do-it-yourself, cost-cutting and energy-saving HVAC tips that add up to better long-term efficiency:
1. Change your air conditioning filters once a month. Clean filters enable your unit to run more efficiently, causing less wear and tear on the equipment.
2. Perform a visual inspection of air conditioning ducts to ensure they are not leaking.
3. Replace or install weather stripping around doors, windows and baseboards. Cracked or worn weather stripping allows cool air to escape. Replacing weather stripping annually could result in a 15 percent savings.
4. Make sure that your home is well insulated. Fiberglass insulation is the easiest to install and the most effective. Insulation with an R factor between 30 and 49 is effective and can save consumers up to 10 percent.
5. Regulate the temperature. Keep the temperature cool at night and warmer during the day when no one is home. Programmable thermostats are an affordable way to regulate indoor temperatures for optimal comfort and efficiency.
6. Block out direct sun with drapes and window shades.
7. Keep windows and doors closed when the air conditioning is on.
8. Use ceiling fans to help circulate cool air throughout the house.
9. Plan hot work for cooler morning and evening hours. Basic household functions such as washing, drying and ironing clothes, baking and cooking all make it harder for the cooling system to do its job.

Students in the HVAC program in the School of Technical Trades at Florida Career College learn service skills in electrical controls and motors, refrigeration systems and mechanics, heating systems and controls, air conditioning systems, energy efficiency and green awareness. If you would like to pursue a career in residential and commercial HVAC repair, call Florida Career College 888-852-7272

Anthem Education Group Shares Flossing Tips

The sweetness of Valentine’s Day often overshadows the importance of February being National Children’s Dental Health Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is the leading chronic infectious disease among children in the U.S. and it can lead to developmental issues affecting eating, speaking, socializing, learning and more. The good news is tooth decay can easily be prevented with proper dental care.

“It is never too early to teach children proper flossing technique,” said Kathie Marsh, Dental Assistant program curriculum coordinator for Anthem Education Group. “In fact, parents can start gently flossing their baby’s teeth as soon as two teeth appear.”

When educating your children about flossing, keep these five flossing tips from the Anthem Education Group Dental Assistant program in mind:

1. Use a threader to assist in flossing. Threaders are especially helpful if you have braces or other dental appliances.

2. Floss before you brush so fluoride in toothpaste can reach between your teeth.

3. Guide floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion.

4. Slide floss against the tooth surface and underneath the gum line. Pay attention to teeth next to toothless gaps.

5. Practice good flossing techniques at least once a day.

The Anthem Education Group Dental Assistant program is offered at Anthem College campuses in Atlanta; Beaverton, Ore.; Fenton, Mo.; Irving, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Maryland Heights, Mo.; Orlando, Fla.; and Sacramento, Calif., as well as the Bryman School of Arizona in Phoenix; Anthem Career College in Nashville, Tenn.; and Anthem Institute in Las Vegas. Students learn chair-side skills, instrument and tray set-up and sterilization, dental radiography, dental procedural coding and dental office skills, as well as proper brushing and flossing techniques and more.

Florida Career College Teams with Companies to Create Industry-Current Curriculum

School shares tips on turning business relationships into career opportunities.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (January 17, 2013) – College graduates whose courses of study correlate with a specific field and job skill experience lower unemployment rates than those who graduate with a general degree, according to a study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.  Fort Lauderdale-based Florida Career College (FCC) specializes in offering curricula that teach practical and applicable skills for specific industries.  Through partnerships with national corporations, FCC instructors and executives are forging corporate relationships to give their students a competitive edge in the workforce.

“We regularly meet with business executives to uncover the knowledge and skills they seek in new hires and discuss how Florida Career College can prepare students to enter the real world,” said Lawrence Avers, Vice President of Student Development for Florida Career College.  “We are leveraging our business connections and developing new ones to fulfill our mission of successfully preparing graduates for new career opportunities.”

Based on its current corporate relationships, Florida Career College has the following three recommendations for how schools and corporations can work together to create an industry-current curriculum:

1. Invite company executives to join your school’s advisory board and help shape the curriculum to fit their needs and ultimately better  prepare students for employment.

2. Encourage instructors to visit business operations.  The more knowledgeable an instructor is about a company, the more he or she can get students excited about the possibility of employment opportunities.

3. Develop well-rounded students with hard and soft skills.  An employee must be adept at applying knowledge in a working environment but also must have people skills to further his or her success.

Margate-based Saveology is one of several noteworthy companies currently working on curriculum development with FCC.

“We have a symbiotic relationship with Florida Career College,” said Meredith Jimenez, Head of Corporate Development for Saveology.com.  “We have a continuous need for highly trained computer technicians and salespeople for our MyTechHelp division.  Florida Career College has helped meet this demand by referring graduating students who are eager to work in a fast-paced environment, as well as modifying their curriculum to meet our specific needs.”

Anthem's School of I.T. and Design

The Digital World Continuous to Evolve and Expand

Computers, information networks, and new media are three components of our digital world that continue to evolve and expand. As the market for new technology grows, the number of jobs available grows too.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently published its redesigned Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2012-2013. One of the updates they made was adding more profiles for computer-related occupations, including: computer network architect, web developer, network and computer systems administrators, and database administrators. The BLS also reports that employment for computer and math- related occupations is projected to grow by 22 percent from 2010-2020.

If you are looking for a long-term career path, studying computers or new media may be perfect for you. Here are a few of the qualities that are necessary for a career as a Computer Network Engineer, New Media Programmer, Computer Animator, or Web Designer.

Interest in Technology

Do you like learning new skills and concepts? Are you a technological trendsetter? An individual interested in computer-related occupations, must be a creative problem solver. If you are hoping to pursue a career in Network Engineering, Programming, Design or Animation, you should have an interest in gathering data, learning new skills, and working in a team environment.

Knowledge of Hardware and Software

It is essential to know that behind every program, design, network, or animation there’s a set of software and hardware that must be mastered first. To succeed in computer-related fields, you must be able to understand the physical components of a network, knowledge of programming languages, as well as be able to program or use software to design and built products. For example, Computer network engineers are responsible for the network security and data storage of local-area and wide-area networks.

Ability to Solve Problems

Being able to work in a team environment with fellow designers, engineers, programmers, and project managers to solve problems or to implement a new product is one of the most important skills for a computer-related career. For example, a computer network engineer will have to determine the best methods for setting up clients’ networks that are efficient and effective. A web designer will have to determine the best user-centered design and technique for developing websites or mobile apps.

It’s important to remember that behind every network, application, website or mobile app there is an end-user relying on your product to communicate their business goal and objective. The ability to solve problems and analyze potential flaws before the product gets to the hands of the end-user is the key to a successful career in any computer-related field.

Are you interested in pursuing a career working with computers, but don’t know where to start? Consider getting your career-focused training at Anthem Education!

Our computer-related programs include:

Computer Science and Information Systems degree programs at Morrison University in Reno, Nevada

Computer Networking and Security degree and diploma programs at different campuses across the United States.

Student Success Guide

What is Student Success?

I’m sure you all have your own ideas and opinions on this subject. Many may believe it’s the student that never misses class, studies every day, and graduates with a high GPA. But it can be as simple as grasping difficult concepts, being involved in student organizations or applying what you have learned in the real world. A successful student is one that realizes their journey is not over, they are continually impacting those around them. Here are some tips to help you achieve student success.

1.      Master Your Schedule.

There are 168 hours in a week. Make sure you know how you are spending your time. Prepare a weekly schedule, and keep up with it daily. If you find planners or agendas useless, use you smartphone. There are many time management apps you can download.

Great Time Management Apps:

  • Astrid Task/Todo list for Android Phones. With the Astrid Task App you will never miss a deadline, plus you will be able to automatic sync your tasks across your phone or Astrid.com.  Download for free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.timsu.astrid
  • My Class Schedule is another Android App Phone. Great App for keeping you up to date with your school work. The app is free with ads or you can purchase it for $1.31.
  • Inclass is an Iphone/Ipad App. With this app you are able to organize your schedule, share your notes, plus much more. To download click here http://www.inclassapp.com/

 2.      Go to Class

Showing up to class is the easiest task you can do. By attending class diligently you show your instructors you care. If you make the effort to show up and pay attention to the key topics being discussed, you definitely improve your chances for getting a good grade.  School is a pretty expensive commitment to not commit all the way.  If you are allowed to use your smartphone in class, use a note taking app or a note recording app.

Note Apps:

  • Evernote It’s a free app available to Android or Iphone smartphone users in conjunction with a desktop program. If you take a note using your phone (text, voice recording or snapshot) it will sync to both your online Evernote account and your PC.
  • Easy Voice Recorder is an Android App that lets you record your class lecture.

 3.      Improve your Study Strategy

Come up with a strategy that complements your schedule and learning style. There are many techniques you can employ to make studying less demanding and more effective. For example, you can use Mnemonics to help you memorize difficult material or flash cards to actively retain what you have memorized.

  • Mnemonics-” target=”_blank” We all remember from elementary school or junior high the order of planets by repeating these mnemonics, “My Very Eager Mother Just Served us Nine Pickles”, or “My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets.”
  • Example of an Anatomy Mnemonic- “A Peaceful Thoughtful Man” for Aortic, Pulmonary, Tricuspid, and Mitral.
  • Flash Cards-Are great for kinetic learners, the energy required to make them, plus the active engagement of reading them out load will help you retain the information at a faster pace. However, in order for flash cards to work they must be read out loud daily, at least seven days before your exam.
  • Flashcard Apps for Android-StudyDroid  is an easy to use flashcard application. You can make your own flashcards on your computer or you can browse the public flashcards at Studydroid.

 4.      Join or Form a Study Group.

Studying with other students will motivate you to keep up with your studying, plus,  it’s a great way to meet new people.  If you are going to form a study group make sure to limit the group to four to five students. Also select students that share your same dedication to studying and getting good grades.  Remember, “Two heads are better than one”.

5.      Join Campus Clubs/Organizations.

The skills you learn from a club or organization can help you succeed in your classes too, plus it looks great on your resume. Being part of a club or organization is a great way to network, promote awareness and to force you to stay focus on your schoolwork.

Anthem Education is dedicated to helping our students achieve success. We are here to help you find yourself, by learning a new skill. New College Grads See Better Employment Prospects for Second Year in a Row

Last April, we wrote a blog about hiring predictions for new college graduates. At that time, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported that hiring of 2011 graduates was expected to increase by a whopping 19.3 percent. It was a big step in the right direction after graduate employment prospects took a noticeable hit during the recession.

But what about this year?

Well, I am very happy to report that this positive trend is expected to continue!

Larry Gordon of the Los Angeles Times also cites findings from a recent report by the Collegiate Employment Research Institute, which says, “Employers are now more optimistic about the college labor market than at any time since 2007.” Being a 2009 graduate, I remember what it felt like during my last year of college. It wasn’t easy trying to figure out what I was going to do after I graduated. Plus, all the negative talk about unemployment, college graduates struggling to find work and having to compete with older, more experienced job candidates certainly didn’t help.

So believe me when I say this is good news. Granted, overall unemployment rates for college graduates under the age of 24 is still too high (6.2 percent) according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, their prospects continue to slowly improve, and are significantly better than people in the same age group with only a high school diploma (22.5 percent).

At Anthem Education schools and colleges, our work doesn’t stop with your education. If you are already enrolled in one of our career-focused programs, you know that we employ Career Services Advisors at each of our campuses who are dedicated to supporting you in your job search. And best of all, their services are available even after you graduate!

If you’ve been thinking about getting started in a new career field and want to learn more about our programs and the services, please visit the Anthem Education website or give us a call at 1.866.381.6397. We would love to help you find the program that’s right for you!

Pharmacist Pouring Pills into Bottle

Anthem College Student, Instructor Win Top Honors

The Missouri Association of Private Career Colleges and Schools (MAPCCS) has given both Student of the Year and Instructor of the Year honors to members of the Anthem College-Maryland Heights campus.

Mia Malcolm, a graduate from the College’s Pharmacy Technician program, was named Student of the Year, and Dawn Roethemeyer, Lead Instructor for the  same program, was named Instructor of the Year. Both were nominated by Campus President Heidi Wind.

Mia Malcolm: “Phenomenal” journey and character

“As a student, Mia inspired me with her actions, her mentorship to her fellow students, and her determination to succeed,” Wind wrote to MAPCCS. “Her journey and character are phenomenal, but she is so humble that she does not realize what makes her stand out in a crowd. She is the blood, sweat, and tears of a true student.”

Malcolm’s life was transformed the day her son was born at just one pound, eight ounces, and twelve inches. He was not expected to live beyond two weeks, and if he did, the outlook was grim: his brain bled in three places, his lungs were “almost nonexistent,” and he wasn’t expected to walk, talk, or have much brain function.

Malcolm stayed with her son for 14 straight days, meeting daily with a team of physicians and one pharmacist who promised her that he would save her boy. “As soon as they left the room,” Malcolm says, “I started researching pharmacy schools. I wanted the ability to offer that kind of peace to someone someday.”

Throughout her son’s considerable medical issues and endless medical appointments, Malcolm stayed “strong and positive,” Wind wrote. She  entered Anthem College in May 2010, ten years after her last school experience. But the gap didn’t affect her achievements: she received Academic Excellence Awards in every class, served as a student ambassador to for new students, and co-chaired the group. She graduated from Anthem College in September 2011 with a 98.1% GPA.

While studying at Anthem, Malcolm was also enrolled in Washington University in St. Louis, where she will receive a Bachelor of Science in Math and Physics in May 2012 before going on to the University of Southern Illinois’ School of Pharmacy.

And her son? He is now two, doing much better, and has grown stronger all around. “Mia is an amazing mother,” Wind writes, and her son “is a  happy and playful little boy.”

Dawn Roethemeyer: Dedication to students “makes them want to be great.”

“What sets Dawn Roethemeyer apart from other nominees,” Wind wrote in nominating Roethemeyer, “is the personal impact she has on her students. Yes, she teaches them the information they need to know. Yes, she encourages them…[but] most importantly, Dawn has the ability to genuinely affect each of her students’ lives on a deeper level.”

“When interviewing graduates who are now working in the pharmacy technology field, they all discuss specific moments when they were going through a hardship, and Dawn was there to listen and offer advice when needed. Dawn’s students look at her as a role model, both personally and professionally. Her dedication to her students makes them want to be great.”

Here are a few comments from Anthem College graduates who studied under Roethemeyer:

  • “When I needed extra help studying for the PTCB (Pharmacy Certification Technician Board certification exam), Dawn came in on her day off to help me. When we were both stumped on a particular problem, she found other resources to find the solution. Dawn is the first one to celebrate her students’ success. She pours her heart and soul into teaching. She is caring and compassionate. I want to teach because of her amazing characteristics.”
  • “It is rare to find someone who goes above and beyond their duties as a teacher. Dawn’s determination and dedication, as well as love and compassion, contributes to making sure that each student she teaches leaves the school with the knowledge of the Pharmacy Technician field. She is not just a teacher to teach, she is a teacher who cares.”
  • “When I was ready to give up on me, Dawn wasn’t. When I started at Anthem College, I had just received my GED after waiting over 25 years. I never thought I could get through college, but I did, with a 3.7 GPA. I owe it to Dawn and her support and never giving up on me.”

Says Mia Malcolm: “Ms. Dawn was always very supportive of me inside the classroom and in my personal life. Right after my son had surgery I had to miss a week of school. I came to school that Friday and took a test and I was very anxious. She told me just to relax and remember that I was amazing…that I was excelling in school to provide him with an amazing life. She always gave us 200%, even when she felt less than 100%. She held us together through the loss of our classmate and friend. She made us all better versions of ourselves.”

Roethemeyer holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southern Illinois University and has worked as a PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician since 2001. She is a member of the National Pharmacy Technician Association, sits on the Pharmacy Technician Educator’s Council, and is working on Sterile Products Certification through NPTA. Her specialty is community pharmacy.

Roethemeyer began her Anthem College career as a Pharmacy Technician Instructor. After just a year, she was promoted to Lead Instructor, responsible for delivering classroom material, coordinating externships—a period in which students who have completed all coursework are placed in local pharmacies for supervised work experience—and assisting with job placements.

Last summer, Wind gave Roethemeyer the College’s Graduate Commitment Award in recognition of  her efforts to match Pharmacy Technician graduates with jobs in their fields and exceeding the 70% standard set by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. In September 2011, Roethemeyer’s peers voted to give her the Going the Extra Mile Award, based on her work with them and her students.

musical chairs

Education, Job Skills, Employment and Musical Chairs

Have you ever played musical chairs?

You make a circle or square or some other shape out of chairs and everyone starts walking around them when the music starts playing. When the music stops, everyone rushes to sit in a chair. People who can’t find a chair to sit in are out of the game. It’s all good fun…until you can’t find a chair.

Seems simple enough, right?

Well in an interesting twist, I just read a special report from the Lumina Foundation that associated the job skills, education and employment puzzle with a game of musical chairs. Well, two games to be exact. Here’s what it said:

“Occupations that require higher-level skills — healthcare, for example — are growing. Low-skill jobs aren’t exactly disappearing, but their numbers are shrinking, leaving more workers competing for them…”

Now here it comes!

“…It’s like two games of musical chairs, where chairs are taken away from one game — the one for low-skill workers — and added to the game for workers with the skills and knowledge that today’s workplace demands.”

You know, a lot of times I read these 100+ page reports and I just get lost in a sea of data, graphs and conclusions that make little sense to me. But this…this I can picture in my head. I can see it. And it makes sense:

If you want a job, you have greater odds of finding one if you have a skill set that meets the needs of today’s job market.

Let’s roll with the healthcare example.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects to see some of the most job growth in the healthcare sector (5.6 million jobs) through the year 2020. Obviously, they need people who can fill those positions. However, if you only have a high school diploma, you can’t expect to be hired for one of those positions, right?  You need the skills that qualify you to work in the healthcare industry and in a specific field in that industry, such as a Medical or Dental Assistant, Surgical Technologist, Pharmacy Technician, etc.

So how do you get those skills? Education and/or training. Earning a post-secondary diploma, degree or some type of credential from an accredited post-secondary institution can help you learn the skills and knowledge you need for today’s job market.

Anthem Education offers a variety of career-focused degree and diploma programs that help train students to prepare for careers in the healthcare, business, technology, legal and veterinary technology fields. And with 22 campuses across the United States and Anthem College Online, we are not hard to find!

Visit the Anthem Education website to learn more about our programs and services or call us today at 1.866.381.6397. We look forward to hearing from you!

Instructor with Students in Computer Lab

Interested in Computers? There’s More Than IT Out There!

What do you picture when you think of a person who works with computers?

It’s no secret that the ideas of a “computer geek” or “computer nerd” have worked their way into our stereotypes. Think characters such as Steve Urkel and the guys on the Big Bang Theory.  Or maybe Matthew Broderick in WarGames. I’m told he was the essence of “computer geek” back in the 80s.

But times are slowly changing according to a recent article in The New York Times.

Working with computers no longer means you have to be male, love video games and speak ‘Programming’ as a second language. And in today’s society, working in the technology field can be a great opportunity for people who are looking for a career that is expected to be around for a while.

Keeping that in mind, there are a lot of different options for people who are interested in working with computers.

In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently published its redesigned Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2012-2013. 7 Characteristics of a Great Teacher

What makes a great teacher? I’m sure you all have your own ideas and opinions on this subject, but have you ever wondered if there was evidence of specific characteristics of a great teacher?

In 2010, The Atlantic magazine set out to answer this very question with some help from Teach for America. The subsequent article, titled “What Makes a Great Teacher?” sheds some light on the traits that are often shared by the best and most effective teachers. According to their findings, great teachers:

  • Set big goals for students
  • Constantly reevaluate what they are doing
  • Enthusiastically engage students and their families into the process
  • Keep the focus on student learning at all times
  • Plan exhaustively and with a clear purpose
  • Work relentlessly no matter what kind of obstacles they or their students face inside and outside the classroom

Teach for America also notes the fact that great teachers check frequently with students to make sure they understand what’s being taught. However, it is more than asking students if they have questions. I’m sure many of you can remember a time when you were confused about something, but when the teacher asked if anyone had any questions, you were too nervous or embarrassed to ask about it.

Well, great teachers have to get creative and find ways to get the feedback they need to make sure students understand.

Take Allen Wiseman, for example. Wiseman is a general education instructor at Anthem College – Maryland Heights who recently spent 15 weeks observing another instructor’s class. His goal was to identify and evaluate teaching methods that increased student engagement in the learning process and would help make him a better teacher.

One thing he noticed in his colleague’s class was that the teacher asked lots of questions and refused to answer them himself. Students could only squirm in silence for so long before someone spoke up. Asking multiple questions helped point students in the direction of the correct answer while increasing their understanding of the concept being taught.

You can read more about Wiseman’s experience in his paper: Classroom Observations.

Anthem Education is dedicated to employing great instructors who are passionate about the subjects they teach and have professional experience in their fields. St. Louis, MO, March 27, 2012―George and LouAnn Reed, owners of three Massage Envy locations in the St. Louis area, have been named the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU) Honorable Mention Employer of the Year.

In business since 2005, the Reeds have employed 158 career college graduates, including nearly 50 who graduated from Anthem College campuses in Maryland Heights and Fenton. The Reeds have actively engaged with Anthem College, a member of APSCU, and work with College massage therapy instructors on curriculum enhancements, serve as guest lecturers, and help students prepare for employment interviews.

“We are delighted that George and LouAnn Reed have received this important recognition,” says Anthem Education Chancellor and CEO James Hutton, PhD. “Although employers generally do not receive enough recognition for their support of career education, they are a vital element in the career education equation.”

“Our students pursue postsecondary education with a purpose: employment and upward mobility,” Hutton says. “Employers such as Massage Envy not only provide both, they often go above and beyond to ensure that the education students receive is on target and builds up the talent base needed in critical career fields. We at Anthem thank George and LouAnn Reed for their outstanding efforts.”

Mrs. Reed represented Massage Envy at a recent APSCU-sponsored ceremony in Washington, D.C. and accepted the award on behalf of her business. She later participated in visits to Capitol Hill lawmakers to discuss how career colleges graduates provide employers an educated and skilled workforce.

In addition to offering the Associate of Applied Science degree and Diploma in Massage Therapy, Anthem College also offers diploma and degree programs that prepare students to enter fields as Dental Assistants, Medical Assistants, and Pharmacy Technicians. The Fenton campus also offers a Medical Billing and Coding program, and the Maryland Heights campus has a Surgical Technologist program that offers the Associate degree only.

The Maryland Heights campus is north of St. Louis, located at 13723 Riverport Drive, just off the Maryland

Heights Expressway. The Fenton campus, south of the city, is located at 645 Gravois Bluffs Boulevard, just east of State Highway 141.

To learn more about Anthem College degree and diploma programs, call the Maryland Heights campus at 855.526.8426 or visit the campus website. The Fenton campus can be reached at 855.326.8436.
